*The above amounts represent the maximum benefit – the most anyone can receive from SSI or CAPI.  Not everyone will qualify for the maximum benefit amount.  SSI and CAPI payments are reduced depending on other income such as retirement benefits, income from wages, or pensions (however, the first $20 a month in Social Security benefits or other unearned income is disregarded in determining SSI eligibility and benefit levels).

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SSI:  Applicants must be 65 years of age or older, blind, or disabled.  Certain minors may also be eligible.  Asset limits:  One Person - $2,000; Two Persons - $3,000.  (This may include CDs, stocks, savings, etc.)

Eligible persons may have a burial plot, auto, owner occupied home, up to $1,500 set aside for burial (per eligible person).  NOTE:  This must be in a separate, clearly identified account.   Eligible persons may also have certain types of life insurance policies; values, if any, are determined by the Social Security Administration.

How to Apply for SSI:  Contact Social Security’s toll-free number Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., at 1-800-772-1213.

How to Apply for CAPI:  Immigrants who are not eligible for Federal SSI, may apply for the state program, CAPI (Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants).  Call 1-800-648-0954 or 510-268-2332 for information.

NOTE:  Benefit levels and eligibility criteria listed above as based upon information provided by the Social Security Administration and the CAPI Consortium.  The local Social Security office or the CAPI Consortium must make final determinations of benefits and eligibility.
