The Agency

Legal Assistance for Seniors (LAS) is a non-profit agency serving Alameda County residents who are 60 years of age and older.  We provide representation in court and administrative hearings, legal advice and information, community education and training, as well as referrals to other community resources in the following areas:  prevention of elder abuse, public benefits, guardianship, conservatorship, naturalization and public benefits for immigrants, consumer issues and health insurance (Medicare and Medi-Cal).

 Through its Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), LAS provides individual counseling and community education to Medicare beneficiaries of all ages in the areas of Medicare, Medicare supplements, Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans, low income assistance, and long-term care insurance.

  The Position

The Development Director is responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing all aspects of the development program for Legal Assistance for Seniors. This person reports to and works closely with the Executive Director.  The Development Director will partner with corporations, foundations, government agencies, community organizations and individuals toward the advancement of the mission of LAS, actively developing potential funding sources. The Development Director will manage all aspects of donor relations, work with board committees and engage volunteers and key staff, when appropriate, to collectively support the fundraising effort for core programs as well as new or innovative projects when identified. Fundraising efforts include but are not limited to events, conference planning, direct mail solicitation, newsletter, annual report, donor mentoring, grant writing and research for new funding sources.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1.  Develop and execute an annual fundraising plan for LAS, approved by the Executive Director and in collaboration with the fundraising committee of the board to include the following:

a.      Manage development functions including supervising staff and volunteers engaged in fundraising activities and events.

b.     Ensure that accurate donor records are maintained.

c.      Work collaboratively with the Executive Director and Board committees to solicit gifts and sponsorships and lead the planning of signature and educational events, maintaining accurate budgets, achieving set financial objectives.

d.     Maintain an updated agency website to reflect current donation opportunities, agency events and general information to tell the story of LAS programs, services and successes.

e.      Secure financial support needed to meet the agency’s annual budget of $1.5million.

f.       Keep current with all grant proposals, grow individual donor base, cultivate major gifts, and manage annual giving campaign.

g.      Develop and implement a marketing and public relations strategy.

h.      Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential donors, leveraging key relationships and contacts in the community.

 2. Provide support to the Executive Director in growing and maintaining relationships with local constituencies, community based organizations and individuals to further the objectives of LAS program services.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1.     Effective, creative, persuasive verbal and written communication skills

2.     Computer proficient including knowledge of Microsoft Office and management of Salesforce database

3.     Interest in senior issues with an understanding of the non profit, and social services sector

4.     Understanding of Federal, State and Local funding opportunities in both the public and private sectors

5.     Strong interpersonal skills with ability to supervise and motivate co workers

6.     Resourceful in networking, developing and cultivating community relationships

7.     Ability to work flexible hours

8.     Access to a vehicle for travel county wide

9.     Self-motivated and able to work independently and as a team member

10. Well organized and able to manage multiple tasks

11. Knowledge of varied fundraising methods and best practices in non profit development

12. Produce general, high quality content for website

13. Strong partnership building and event planning skills

 Minimum Qualifications:

·       Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) in fundraising or related field with three years proven fundraising experience

·       Ability to manage high paced activity, priorities and deadlines with grace and humor

·       Must be able to work well within a complex organizational environment, supporting numerous projects and teams concurrently

·       High  energy, positive “can do” attitude, flexibility, attention to detail, high degree of initiative

·       Valid CA driver’s license, access to a vehicle with appropriate insurance

·       Ability to supervise and work a flexible schedule

 Working Conditions:

·       Extensive computer and telephone use

·       Flexible work schedule to include some weekends and evenings

·       Typical office environment

·       Travel to meetings within Alameda County and Bay Area

 Classification:  Full time, exempt position

Compensation:  DOE. Generous benefits package
