Legal Volunteering

Legal Volunteer Program

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with LAS. We are always accepting applications for law clerks, fellows, post-bar volunteers, volunteer attorneys, and legal support volunteers.

Volunteer Law Clerks
We generally host law clerks during the summer, fall, and spring semesters. Our law clerks work directly with clients both through phone intakes and in-office client consultations. They are responsible for doing legal research and writing, and otherwise providing legal support to LAS’s attorneys and advocates. Our law clerks are encouraged to participate in home visits, Community Education presentations, observation in court & administrative hearings, and court participation if Bar Certified. We are also open to accommodating intern interests, and requests for projects or writing samples.

Fellowships and Post-bar volunteers
LAS is happy to work with rising third year law students and recent law school graduates to develop fellowship projects for submission to Borchard, Equal Justice Works, Soros Justice Fellowship Program, Skadden, or similar programs. LAS is also open to hosting recent law school graduates who are interested in volunteering while awaiting their bar results and/or looking for permanent employment.

Volunteer Attorneys
Volunteer attorneys provide counsel, advice, and representation to clients at LAS. They are responsible for providing excellent service to clients and other callers with legal issues. Inactive attorney volunteers provide similar services in our administrative law practice areas. LAS carries malpractice insurance which covers a limited number of volunteer attorneys.

Legal Support Volunteers
Legal support volunteers help attorneys and advocates with phone intakes, conflict checks, data entry, production of closing letters, and other casework and correspondence.
