Legal Assistance for Seniors Celebrates its 35th Anniversary
with a “Senior Prom”
This celebration of service to
Alameda County seniors took place on Friday, November 4,
2011 at the Oakland Marriott City Center
Ballroom with nearly 200 people in
attendance.
The event began with a cocktail reception and prom photos, which set
the tone for an evening of fun and excitement. Following the
reception was a cocktail auction that included items such as
vacation getaways, libations, and unique tours around the Bay
Area. Guests were then invited to enjoy dinner and a live
auction with a fanfare of additional fabulous prizes, followed by
dancing.
A highlight of the evening was the participation of Daewon B. and
his guardian Edna W. – Daewon presented a cake for auction that was
simply “priceless.”

Edna told her story of how she was supported by LAS
attorney, Mariel Kusano who worked with other LAS staff and volunteers
to help Edna obtain the guardianship of Daewon, a child she loved and
feared she would lose. The cake was a thank you for the help they
received from LAS that led to Edna obtaining permanent guardianship of
Daewon. This family’s story truly illustrates why LAS is called
to provide these much-needed services.
Another highlight of the evening was the tribute paid to the three
“founding mothers” of LAS, Doka Clausen, Jane Welch, and Willie
James. These women provided a passion and dedication to service
that eventually helped LAS to become the agency it is today. Two
of Doka Clausen’s daughters Kris and Laurie Clausen were present for
the event. Kris Clausen gave a heart-warming tribute to her
mother and also generously donated several auction items for this
event.

LAS was recognized on this 35th Anniversary, with
commendations from Alameda County and the City of Oakland.
All of us at Legal Assistance for Seniors would like to express
our most sincere gratitude for your participation and generosity in
making this anniversary celebration a huge success.
We particularly want to thank all those who donated auction
items, worked on committees and bid on auction items.

The event could not have been the success it was without those
who underwrite the cost of the event, our generous sponsors and
friends.
We Thank You, Sponsors!
