Sabina Makarov
Staff Title: Contracts Compliance Officer
Birthdate: June 2, 1980
Birthplace: Odessa, Ukraine
Sabina was born in Odessa, Ukraine on June 2, 1980. While going to school in the Ukraine, it was mandatory for her to study English as a second language. When she entered University, Sabina decided to continue studying English with the hopes of eventually becoming an English teacher.
Sabina has always wanted to become an ambassador for the U.S. State department.
In 1999, she came to the U.S. with her grandparents and younger sister in search for a better life. It’s safe to say that all her English studies were well worth it. However, her career path took a marked turn a couple years down the line. In 2000, Sabina was sitting at home one day, eating Oreos (her favorite American cookie at the time), when she realized how bored she was with life. So she got up and decided to go for a walk at a nearby shopping center (shopping by the way, is Sabina’s favorite hobby). Sabina submitted applications to many of the shops, and eventually, she was hired as a salesperson by Ross. Oreos to Ross in 60 seconds!
A couple years later, Sabina went to Diablo Valley College and then transferred to San Francisco State College, where she received her degree in International Relations. You may not have known it, but Sabina has a very strong interest in world politics and events. Perhaps it’s her unique background, having come from Eastern Europe, or perhaps it her daughter, Alexis, who Sabina calls “little monkey” and “little terrorist.” Yes, that’s right. Sabina calls her daughter a terrorist. Not because she drops bombs in her diapers, but because the 18-month-old girl terrorizes Sabina’s grandparents, who graciously look after Alexis when Sabina is at work. In reality, she is nothing like a terrorist or a monkey. If you walk by Sabina’s office, you can see a few wonderful pictures of Alexis hanging on her wall.

Interestingly, Sabina has always wanted to become an ambassador for the U.S. State department. Even if she had to sit at a desk and stamp visas, she’d be perfectly happy with that. But Sabina, don’t do that. You could either be sitting in some dank corner of a U.S. embassy in Central Asia, stamping visas until the Llamas came home, or you could be at LAS helping Russian speaking seniors with Medicare Part D. Not to mention, you get that one personal day a year. For Sabina, the perfect day off would consist of going shopping, getting a haircut, pampering herself, going shopping again, going to the beach, and going shopping again. Then, she would take the next day off because there’s just so much shopping to do!!!
