3rd Annual Elder Abuse Conference
Over 250 professionals attended Legal Assistance for Seniors' 3rd Annual Elder Abuse Conference at the Hilton Oakland Airport on April 30 and May 1, 2007. Thank you for making it such a success!

A Look Back at the 2007 Conference
The 3rd
Annual Elder Abuse Conference was attended by 255 individuals
representing the private bar, law enforcement, legal and social service
providers, fiduciaries, state and local government, and health care.
The majority of attendees were from California; however, one
participant represented the Provincial Government of Alberta, and
others came from North Dakota, Arizona, Idaho, Texas and Oregon.
The conference began in 2005 as a way of providing a quality learning and networking environment for those dedicated to elder abuse prevention. Net income from the event is used to support services to elder abuse clients. Elder abuse cases account for 19% of the total caseload at LAS.
The 2007 conference included a General Session
presented by Lisa Nerenberg, a well-known Bay Area expert in the field
of elder abuse prevention; a luncheon presentation by Dr. Bennett Blum,
internationally renowned expert in the field of undue influence on the
elderly; and another by Dr. Lisa Gibbs, a member of the Elder Abuse
Forensic Center in Orange County, on the subject of forensic markers of
abuse and neglect. There were five workshop sessions with six
concurrent workshops each.
LAS board member and elder abuse attorney Daniel Murphy presented the LAS "Leading the Fight for Seniors' Rights" Lifetime Achievement Award to Lisa Nerenberg for her continuing work in the field of elder abuse prevention.
Continuing education credits were awarded to
attorneys, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, and Marriage and Family
Therapists.
Attendees enjoyed getting to know each other at a reception on Monday evening, and many chose to ride a ferry across the bay to AT&T Park where they watched the San Francisco Giants play the Colorado Rockies.
We are proud of a statement made by Rodney Low, a program developer with the State Bar of California, who wrote “…this event has now become the benchmark event for the Elder Abuse Prevention community and is quite successful in its own right.”
