Consumer Protection

In LAS’ consumer service area, LAS cooperates with Adult Protective Services and the Alameda County courts in providing legal services to seniors who are victims of identity theft, scams, frauds, or are facing debt collection.

LAS staff assist seniors in:

• drafting cease and desist letters to creditors
• facilitate discussions with debt collectors and financial institutions
• identifying and ending financial abuse and identity theft
• understanding their complex financial situation and its legal implications and consequences
  
• protecting against future scams and frauds

Through these services, LAS aids seniors defending against unfair collection practices and resolving past debts.  By advocating on behalf of judgment-proof seniors and informing seniors on how to protect themselves against scams, frauds, and identity theft, LAS relieves consumer clients from financial harassment and abuse and empowers seniors to be aware of and to safeguard their own finances.
